Email marketing is a proven way to improve your business sales, but it's also full of traps. Email marketing tools have evolved a lot in the recent past. Make sure you don't fall into the same old traps but learn about the latest email marketing techniques that can improve your business.

  1. Pre-Targeting

Before you launch a big campaign that's all about conversions, it's important to warm up your list first. Here's a quick guide on how to do that:

  • When planning your email marketing campaign, it's important to target the right subscribers so your message is received by those who are most interested in what you have to say. You can do this by segmenting your list according to criteria that you decide, which will then allow you to export these subscriber’s email addresses to a spreadsheet or text file.

  • Import these emails into an ad platform that allows for retargeting, such as Twitter, Facebook, or Google AdWords.

  • Create ads that focus on raising brand awareness, and give your followers a sneak preview of what your major campaign will be focusing on.

  • Give the ads some time to get exposure (a week or two should suffice) and then send out your major email campaign.

  1. Avoiding the Promotions tab in Gmail

Introducing Gmail tabs (Primary, Social, and Promotions) has apparently caused a decrease in open rates by up to 30%. So how can you keep your email out of the Promotions tab?

Since more than 66% of emails are opened on mobile devices, we need to focus on that.

Optimize your emails for mobile devices FIRST

Luckily, there are plenty of tools available to test how your emails will look on smaller screens. Here are some of examples:

Litmus: https://litmus.com/email-testing

Email on Acid: https://www.emailonacid.com/email-testing

PreviewMyEmail: http://previewmyemail.com/

If you notice that your emails are being opened frequently but your click-through rates are low, this could be an indication that your content isn't optimized for smaller screens. Make sure to test your emails before sending them out to avoid losing potential customers or subscribers!

  1. Un-personalization

Lately, there has been a lot of discussion about the over-personalization of emails, with some people complaining that they're turned off by seeing their name in the subject line. I guess us marketers have just over-used it to death ;)

Try experimenting with casual subjects and opening lines (which become the preview text), so as not to turn people away immediately, and hopefully you'll see a bump in open rates.

  1. Fancy, new personalization tricks

Using business names

If you are lucky enough to capture the name of the company your subscriber works for, you can use that in your email Subject. Work-related emails definitely get attention, right?

  1. NOT selling

If you want to build a positive relationship with your customers, try providing value and great content in your emails instead of selling them something. By doing this, you'll create a rapport that will help when you do send an email campaign that includes a CTA.

End your email with a little teaser to get them thinking about what's coming next. Examples:

  1. Off-peak sending

Instead of being like everyone else and sending your emails during peak times ( weekday mornings), experiment with sending them at off-peak times instead! Maybe your subscribers get overwhelmed by too many emails at once and are more likely to archive/delete/spam them. But if you send them on a Sunday when they're relaxing and watching football, you might get more of their attention. It's worth a shot!

Email marketing is an essential tool for any business, but it can be difficult to keep up with trends. It’s important to keep experimenting with new email marketing techniques in order to stand out from the competition.
